Administration

Course and Instructor Information

All Information about Economics Courses and Instructors is posted on the bulletin boards just outside the Departmental Main Office, 1035 Heller Hall. It is also available at the front desk of the main office. We post:

* Instructor office hours, office numbers, e-mail addresses, and office telephone numbers;
* The class schedule for the relevant semester;
* All important announcements for economics students.

Closed Courses

If you wish to register for a closed course, please attend class on the first day and request a course permission number (needed for registration) from the instructor. Only five such numbers are given out per course. No permission numbers are given for Economics 1101(Principles of Microeconomics) and 1102 (Principles of Macroeconomics). Students are encouraged to check the online closure information for places that may become available through cancellations.

Course Prerequisites

The department requires that students complete the prerequisites successfully BEFORE taking a course. This applies especially to Econ 3101 and 3102, which are prerequisites for a large number of economics upper division courses. Instructors will ask students to drop courses if prerequisites have not been completed earlier.

Director of Undergraduate Studies

The office of the Director of Undergraduate Studies is also in 1035 Heller Hall. If you have a problem that requires special attention, and/or if you feel that your instructor, teaching assistant or undergraduate adviser cannot be helpful, you should e-mail to make an appointment to speak with Professor Simran Sahi or come during her walk-in office hours. If your problem is in the nature of a complaint about a particular course or instructor, we have a very specific complaint procedure that the receptionist can explain to you -- which first involves your filling out one of the Department of Economics complaint forms. These are available at the front desk in the main office.

Chairman of the Department of Economics

The office of the Chairman of the Economics Department (Professor Narayana Kocherlakota) is in 1035 Heller Hall. If you have exhausted all other means to resolve your problem, you may make an appointment to consult the Chairman. The Department also has a Grievance Committee to handle problems if other attempts at resolution fail.

Advising

Ms. Madhu Bhat, the Economics Undergraduate Adviser, offers advising services throughout the year - walk-in, phone-in, or by e-mail. These include declaration your major or minor, evaluation of transfer or study abroad courses evaluated, and registration assistance. You can pick up the forms for Independent Study Abroad as well. She can also tell you about the services of your CLA Student Community and the CLA Career and Community Learning Center.

Madhu does not have permission numbers for closed classes. Requests for permissions numbers should be sent to the instructor(s) for the class. If an instructor has not yet been assigned, you will need to wait until an instructor is assigned. No permission numbers are given for Economics 1101 and 1102. Students should watch for cancellations on the online Class Schedule.

Advising services are provided by walk-in, phone-in, or e-mail.

Most Economics advising needs can be met by coming in to 1073 Heller. No appointment is necessary but since walk-in ours vary from day-to-day and week-to-week, please check Madhu’s schedule in advance. Please send an e-mail to econugra@econ.umn.edu to find out about office hours. Her hours are also posted on the door of 1073 Heller and are available from the main departmental office in 1035 Heller.

E-mail

Many questions and issues can be resolved via e-mail. Madhu will make every effort to answer your question in a timely manner but you should not put off your e-mail question until the last minute. When sending an e-mail be sure to include:

* Your first and last name;
* Your ID number;
* A brief explanation about your question or concern.

Phone-in

Students may phone in their questions during walk-in hours. To ensure that your adviser will be in when you call, send an e-mail to econugra@econ.umn.edu to find out about office hours. If you are calling at other times, be sure to speak clearly and slowly to leave a message that includes:

* Your first and last name;
* Your ID number;
* Your local telephone number (Long distance calls cannot be made from this office. (If you are not at a local number, you will be better served to send an e-mail.);
* A brief explanation about your question or concern.

Meetings About Graduate Study

During each academic year, we try to have informational meetings for our undergraduate majors, which are held in conjunction with a regular meeting of the Economics Student Organization. The meetings give information about law schools, MBA programs, and graduate programs in Economics.

Listserv Account for Economics Majors

The department has set up a listserv account for economics majors. The address is ECON-MAJ@lists.umn.edu. It is maintained by the Economics Undergraduate Adviser (econugra@econ.umn.edu). All economics majors are automatically members of this account. If you are an economics major and are not on this list, please let Madhu Bhat know and she can add your name. Students can hold discussions with their peers about economics and related issues. The Department puts out information about special events, seminars, talks, internships, job opportunities, university or departmental policies relating to the Economics major, and other pertinent information on this listserv. All economics majors are responsible for information relayed to them via this listserv. If you use an e-mail account that is different from your University x500 account, please make sure you forward all messages.
