Declaring a Major
or a Minor
Department of Economics
Undergraduate Program

Declaring a major or minor in economics is an easy process that can be done on a walk-in basis with Madhu Bhat, the Economics Undergraduate Adviser, in 1073 Heller Hall. Students are encouraged to talk with Madhu as soon as they realize they have a serious interest in Economics.

Students should begin this process by reviewing the material about each of the Economics majors (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts-Quantitative, and Bachelor of Science) and minors (General Economics, Economic Theory, Econometrics, International Trade and Development, Applied Microeconomics, or Monetary Economics).

The next step is to meet with Madhu to discuss the major or minor. It is fine to talk with her even if you are not sure which major or minor you will pursue. Since some of the majors and minors have sequence courses, it is important to talk to her soon so that you can plan your courses appropriately.

You will need to give Madhu:

  • Your first name and last name;
  • Your ID number;
  • The major or minor that interests you -- if you know;
  • Your long term goals, if any (career, graduate school, etc.).

Madhu will do the following things to prepare for your walk-in contact:

  • Send you her walk-in hours for the near future;
  • Prepare a draft of the Major or the Minor Program Plan;
  • Notify you if there are courses that you need to have evaluated.

During the walk-in contact Madhu will do the following:

  • Review the draft of your Major or Minor Program Plan;
  • Identify courses, if any, that you will need to take before officially declaring;
  • Prepare an academic plan that shows you how to efficiently complete your remaining economics coursework;
  • Deal with your Major Declaration Required hold, if you have one;
  • If you have completed all of the prerequisite courses for your major, Madhu will submit your Major Program form to Dr. Simran Sahi, the Director of Undergraduate Studies, for review and approval.
  • If you have not completed all of the prerequisite courses, you should follow your academic plan, then e-mail Madhu once you are done with these courses. At that time she will submit your Major
    Program Plan to Dr. Sahi for approval.
