The Department of Economics strongly encourages students to have one or more international experiences. Taking classes abroad, traveling abroad, or doing an internship abroad, will enhance your education and improve your resume.
Within the last two years Economics majors and minors have studied in:
| Buenos Aires, Argentina Sydney and Brisbane, Australia Sao Paulo, Brazil Beijing and Shanghai, China Copenhagen, Denmark Cairo, Egypt Paris and Montpellier, France Freiburg, Germany Dublin, Ireland Florence, Italy |
Seoul, Korea Cuernavaca, Mexico Amsterdam, Netherland Oslo, Norway St. Andrews, Scotland Barcelona and Toledo, Spain Chiang Mai, Thailand London, United Kingdom Switzerland Venezuela |
The Economics department allows students to take some Economics courses abroad. Typically students are allowed to count two study abroad economics courses towards a major in Economics. The use of study abroad courses towards minor varies from minor to minor. All Study Abroad Economics courses must be pre-approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Simran Sahi.
If you are interested in study abroad, please contact the Learning Abroad Center in 230 Heller Hall (612-626-0000). They have an excellent website that gives information about 220 programs in 60 countries. Students need to attend a First Step Meeting where you will receive information about different kinds of Learning Abroad programs and services.
To decide on a program, students should schedule an individual appointment in the Learning Abroad Center. Please contact the Economics Undergraduate Studies Adviser, Madhu Bhat, in 4-100A Hanson to get a copy of the Study Abroad in Economics handout that highlights different types of programs for Economics students. Please e-mail Madhu in advance (econugra@econ.umn.edu) to find out her office hours.
Next you will want to apply and be accepted to your program. After acceptance, it is important that you get your individual courses pre-approved before you leave.
After you return from your study abroad program you should bring your economics course materials (syllabus, papers, homework, exams, etc.) to Dr. Sahi for final approval. She will inform Madhu about the final approval status. Once your courses are on your official documents (transcript and/or APAS) you should notify Madhu (econadv@umn.edu) so she can update your APAS to appropriately reflect the approval of these courses.
