Math Prerequisites
for an
Economics Major

Department of Economics
Undergraduate Program

Math 1142 vs. 1271 Requirement
For Economics Majors [B.A., B.A. (Quant), and B.S.]
effective 02/24/03

The Department of Economics may accept Math 1142 to count in lieu of Math 1271 if one of the following hold:

  1. The student completed Math 1142 prior to (excluding) Fall 2002, AND the student received a grade of B or better in the course.

  2. The student took a math course at another institution in which that course transferred as the equivalent of Math 1142, AND the student has a grade of B or better, AND the course is approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Economics.

  3. The student is in the B.A.-Quant or B.S. program and completed Math 1142 with a grade of B or better (not recommended since the student must take more math courses anyway).

Otherwise, the student MUST successfully complete Math 1271 (or equivalent) in order to sign up for an Economics major.
