Writing Intensives

Economics majors must take at least one upper-division writing intensive course in Economics in order to graduate. Not all of these courses are available at all times -- consult the Semester Course Schedule for details.

If students are registered for any of the following Economics courses in Fall 2011 or in Spring 2012, they can sign up concurrently for Econ 4100W (one credit) in order to receive writing intensive credit:

 Fall 2011:

Econ 4109H – Itai Sher

Econ 4113- DAVID RAHMAN (Econ 4113 is considered to be equivalent to an honors course).

Econ 4631H – Brian Adams

Econ 4721H – Satoshi Tanaka

Econ 4751H – Xavier Vinyals Mirabent

Econ 4831 – Ramses Armendariz

Spring 2012:

Econ 4731H – Nathalie Pouokam

Econ 4741H – TBA

Econ 4831- Ramses Armendariz

Note that we do offer other Writing Intensive courses during the year  – Econ 4331W, Econ 4431V, Econ 4431W, and Econ 4432W.
Students registered for these CANNOT register for Econ 4100W.

Econ 4100W: Undergraduate Writing in Economics

Note that Econ 4100W does NOT satisfy the Senior Project requirement.

This is a one credit course, meets once a week, and is monitored by a TA.

To receive writing intensive credit for any Honors course or Econ 4831, students can sign up for Econ 4100W concurrently. Course Permission Numbers are available from the TA.

The instructors for the Honors courses (or Econ 4831) will set up the writing assignment and students will work with the Econ 4100W TA to complete the paper.

Satisfying the Senior Project Requirement with a Writing Intensive Course

Students can use their paper from a Writing Intensive Course to satisfy the Senior Project requirement ONLY IF a score of 90/100 or more was received on the final paper AND the Senior Project instructor declares the paper acceptable.

If you receive a 90/100 or above on your paper, please submit the original paper to the Senior Project instructor for review. After reviewing the paper, the instructor will decide if your paper satisfies the Senior Project requirements. If it does so, you will receive clearance for the Senior Project.

IMPORTANT

The department prohibits using the same (or substantially similar) paper for more than one Writing Intensive Course or the Senior Project.

Since Fall 2003, all students registered for Writing Intensive Courses are required to submit a final paper in two forms -- a written version and an electronic version. The electronic version is reviewed to detect any plagiarism. Should any plagiarism be detected, the student will receive a grade of F and a complaint is filed with the CLA Scholastic Conduct Committee. Students should make sure that they cite all sources used. Contact the Writing Center with all of your writing needs.
