PHOST 3 is the newest major release of PHOST, the alternative hosting
program for VGA Planets. More information
on PHOST, links to the older PHOST 2.x distributions, links to other sites,
and useful third-party programs are available on
the original PHOST page
(off-line).
Note that to save disk space
and download time, the documentation files are now available separately
from the remainder of the distributions.
Thomas Voigt's Explore Map 2.1 [91K] program has the same functionality as the existing Explore Map v1.0b program but it has been updated to work with version 3 of the PDK.
Explore Map 2.2[165K] updated by Heiko Schlenker supports the built-in wraparound map support of PHOST 3.
Note that Explore Map 2.1/2.2 will ONLY work with PHOST 3 (not with PHOST v2.x, and not with HOST).
Note that the above archive contains the source code and an executable for the PC Win32 platform. If you are not hosting on a PC Win32 platform, get the archive, get the PDK for your platform, compile the source code, and link with the PDK.
If you are hosting on a DOS/386 or Windows 3.1 platform and have been waiting for the PDK, take note that it is now available below.
NOTE: Because PHOST 3 now has a common file format across all platforms, you can use the DJGPP PDK to write programs that will work with any PC-based PHOST (i.e., for Win32, for DOS). There is no "DJGPP PHOST" just as there are no "DJGPP PUTILS" simply because there is no point.
NOTE: The version 3 PDK will ONLY WORK WITH PHOST 3! It will not work with PHOST v2.x and it will not work with HOST. This backwards compatibility is a feature for the future.
PHOST 3 still works with VPA 3.51e although there is an incompatibility with the PVCR interface. VPA won't recognize PHOST 3 battles properly. VPA will support PHOST 3 in a future release, so hang on and don't bug Alex. In the meantime, view your battles externally using the PVCR command-line interface, or use the Corr program (available in the Addons section above) for fixing up the VCR files prior to viewing.
BSIM
PHOST 3 has three new combat configuration options. The latest release of BSIM (version 2.2) does not support these combat options. If you are in a game in which these three new combat options have non-default values, BSIM will give you incorrect results. Use your imagination, or hope for the best (or write a new simulator!)
PWRAP
Note that PWRAP functionality is now internal to PHOST 3 so you no longer need to use the external PWRAP program.
The Killing Floor
Yes, it does work with PHOST 3. It hasn't been tested extensively, however.
