To construct fmcs_pos_dat.dta, I started with the population of hospitals and nursing homes in the 1996 provider of services file.  Each record in the file has a unique identification number prov_num.  Then I merged in information prov_union file on the number of union contracts for this prov_num.  I also merged in additional geographic information.

See the data dictionary from the 1996 POS for additional information about POS variables.  I include in the file a number of variables from the POS file hat I didn’t use in the paper.  One variable I did use is type_control, a code that gives information about whether the unit is profit or non-profit.  Below I provide the coding information.
