Advice for IDL students (pdf)
Announcement: As of February 1st, 2008, this course has been revised to adopt a new textbook, Microeconomics by Hubbard and O'Brien, 1st or 2nd edition, and changed from printed format to online delivery.
Econ 1101 IDL is the equivalent Econ 1101 Microeconomics Lecture course, only done through distance learning. A new session starts each month on the 15th and lasts for 9 months, during which you will have 4 homeworks to submit and 2 exams to take (you can take this off campus if necessary). After you register for the course, allow two weeks to receive a packet which includes a text, homework assignments, practice exams, and instructions for submitting homeworks and setting up exams. There is no lecture involved in this course, but all material is provided in the packet (and there is an additional textbook if desired) and I will provide feedback on your homework. If you have questions about the material, feel free to email me.
Please see my advice for all IDL students of Econ 1101. This will address most of the questions you might have about the structure and format of the course, as well as helping you successfully learn the material and earn the grade you desire in the course.

"FDI vs. Exports: Accounting for Industry Differences in Export-Sales Intensities"
with Miguel Ricaurte
(abstract)
Industry level data shows striking differences among sectors in their choices of export sales and foreign direct investment sales (i.e., export-sales intensities). Previous attempts to explain this phenomenon, such as in Helpman, Melitz, and Yeaple (2004), have relied primarily on product tradabilty, fixed setup costs, and firm productivity dispersion. In a standard Dixit-Stiglitz model of monopolistic competition, we show that these margins are not enough to account for the variation of export sales to FDI sales observed in the data. We calibrate two variations of this model: sector-specific FDI sales taxes and sector-specific home bias, both of which allow us to match the sector intensities as well as a measure of fixed operational costs of multinational firms.
