Gary and I met in LA, or was it UCLA? I am confused ..., in Fall
1987. We discovered we had lots of common interests, like (properly) driving a
car down Sunset Boulevard; figuring out why, in that small portion of LA east
of Hilgard, west of Veteran, south of Wilshire and north of Sunset, academics
are not highly thought of; testing the power of Tanqueray and tonic; getting into
"Small" before Vanity Fair and Madonna did, and so on and so forth.
Apparently, we also shared some common academic interests. We never managed to
write a paper together, though, even if we tried a couple of times ... The problem
may be that we picked places like this (Gladstone4Fish, in Malibu, in case you
are tempted) to do the so-called initial "brain storming", and we regularly
ended up eating crab and oysters. And, as the pictures above prove, we did it
often and again. They are taken at the same spot, but they are five years apart
(the styles of the sunglasses should help you figure out which is the oldest ...
the t-shirts are of no help: I am wearing the very same one ... a further proof
of UCLA's "out of scale" salaries!) Very often we
had visitors to entertain, and that led us to spend our nights doing amazingly
smart things like the one in the picture below ... (yes, the third one in the
picture is the one you think he is, in case you were visually challenged....

Sometimes
Tim and I pretend to be serious, considerate academics who spend most of their
time pondering deep, fundamental issues ... This is one such case, in Vigo, July
1998. There may have been other cases, and we do make plans almost every week
about having at least one more experience of this kind, but somehow they are hard
to come by. At least, we have got no photographic records of them ... yet!
On the other hand, we do have plentiful records of a number of different rendez
vous. I need to get them into thumbnails, though. Maybe next week.
